Academic Writing
My work can be more easily understood by describing the support I am often asked to give.
Editing: structure, organisation, language and style
I have helped undergraduate students to plan their approach to assignment writing (topic, focus and scope of the task). I have helped Masters degree students to develop strategies to manage their reading, and to select and incorporate relevant literature into their own arguments, whilst ensuring that their voice is apparent throughout. Doctoral students are often challenged to write an Abstract that is concise, yet creates impact and interest in their research.
Proof-reading
I am often asked by native and non-native speakers of English to proof-read the final draft before submission or publication. It is important to take a step back, and to have fresh eyes on the grammatical accuracy of the text.
Syllabus Design
I have worked with teaching teams in language and business settings, to fine-tune the content of syllabus and materials, so that knowledge gained is focussed, contextualised, up-to-date and relevant.
Teacher-training
I have designed and co-written a course for academic staff in the sciences, to enable them to develop their students' writing skills within their disciplines. These academic staff returned to Brazil, and designed their own writing courses, based on the course input received.
Workshops
I have delivered workshops in the UK, Brazil and South Africa, to students and academics pursuing research and publication. I have also designed drop-in writing workshops, aimed at reaching across disciplines and dealing with common challenges at all levels of academic endeavour.
Consultancy
As Group Director of Programmes for an education provider in London and Dublin, I advised the CEO on optimal teaching and learning contexts, and I led the teaching teams through syllabus reviews and redesign, I observed and recruited teaching staff, and advised on teaching methodology and materials in use.
